Foundations

Postures broken down and explained, at a pace that assumes you’re new.

Typically slow · gentle

The teacher stops, explains what a posture is for and where you should feel it, and gives you time to arrange yourself. Fewer postures, more explanation.

Studios label these Basics, Fundamentals, Intro or 101. Same idea, and no assumption that you know what “chaturanga” means.

What to expect

  • A slower pace with real pauses
  • Plain English alongside the Sanskrit
  • Props introduced properly
  • Permission to stop and watch

Level

Built for first-timers. Experienced practitioners come back to these for the detail.

All levels welcome. Every class here is open to every body. Teachers offer options throughout, resting whenever you want to is always fine, and no studio expects you to know the poses on your first visit. Tell the teacher it is your first time — they would rather know.

Who it suits

  • A first class, or a return after years away
  • Anyone who tried a flow class and couldn’t follow it
  • Fixing a posture you’ve been fudging

What it gives you

  • The vocabulary that makes every other class legible
  • Time to ask a question mid-class
  • A realistic sense of what to try next

Before you go

Bring water; mats and props are lent. Arrive ten minutes early and say it’s your first.

On heat — If it’s your first class, an unheated one is easier to judge your own effort in.
