Hatha

Postures held for several breaths with pauses between. Usually the gentlest way in.

Typically slow · gentle

One posture at a time: come in, stay for a handful of breaths, come out, and the teacher sets up the next. No attempt to link them continuously.

It is a catch-all, so intensity varies more than any other label. The duration and any level in the title tell you more than the word does.

What to expect

  • Holds of five or six breaths, with resets
  • More instruction, because there’s time for it
  • Standing, then seated, then floor
  • A closing relaxation

Level

The most reliably all-levels class on a schedule. If the title carries a level, trust that.

All levels welcome. Every class here is open to every body. Teachers offer options throughout, resting whenever you want to is always fine, and no studio expects you to know the poses on your first visit. Tell the teacher it is your first time — they would rather know.

Who it suits

  • Beginners wanting a full class, not a teaching one
  • Anyone who’d rather feel a posture than pass through it
  • Returning after a break

What it gives you

  • Time in each shape to notice what it does
  • The clearest instruction of any physical class
  • A weekly baseline that won’t wear you out

Before you go

Bare feet, and nothing so loose it falls over your head in a forward fold.

On heat — Warm hatha is common — enough to loosen up without the intensity of a hot flow.
