Kundalini
Repetitive movement, vigorous breathing and sound. Aimed at state more than fitness.
Typically slow · moderate
Set sequences called kriyas: one movement, one breath, repeated for a fixed time — often three minutes of the same thing rather than many postures.
Chanting and rapid breathing are ordinary here, and the class feels unlike anything else on a schedule. That is the point of it.
What to expect
- Timed repetitions, longer than they sound
- Rapid breathing techniques, taught as you go
- Chanting you can sit quietly through
- A long relaxation near the end
Level
Physically accessible — most of it is seated — but unusual enough to be disorienting first time.
All levels welcome. Every class here is open to every body. Teachers offer options throughout, resting whenever you want to is always fine, and no studio expects you to know the poses on your first visit. Tell the teacher it is your first time — they would rather know.
Rapid breathing isn’t advised in pregnancy, or with uncontrolled high blood pressure, glaucoma or epilepsy. Sit those parts out; no teacher will mind.
Who it suits
- Drawn to the energetic side over the athletic
- Anyone whose head is unchanged by a physical class
- The plainly curious
What it gives you
- Breathing taught explicitly, not as an aside
- A state most flowing classes never reach
- Very little mirror-watching
Before you go
Loose clothing. White is traditional and entirely optional. Sit on a cushion or block.
