Meditation

Sitting, breathing, and practising where your attention goes. Little movement.

Typically still · gentle

A teacher gives you something specific to do with your attention — follow the breath, scan the body, repeat a phrase — and then you do it, mostly in silence.

These run short, often 30 to 45 minutes. Yoga nidra, done lying down, usually sits here too.

What to expect

  • Sitting on a cushion, block or chair
  • A technique explained plainly, then practised
  • Longer silences than you expect
  • Your mind wandering constantly — that is the practice

Level

Nothing here is physically demanding; the difficulty is the same for everyone.

All levels welcome. Every class here is open to every body. Teachers offer options throughout, resting whenever you want to is always fine, and no studio expects you to know the poses on your first visit. Tell the teacher it is your first time — they would rather know.

Who it suits

  • Wanting the attentional side without a physical class
  • Anyone who has tried an app and lost the habit
  • Practitioners adding sitting to movement

What it gives you

  • A technique you can practise alone afterwards
  • Correction you cannot get from an app
  • A room doing the same thing, which helps

Before you go

Sit however your back is comfortable. Studios have blocks, bolsters and chairs.
