Restorative
A few shapes, fully propped, held for a long time. The aim is to do nothing, thoroughly.
Typically still · gentle
Bolsters and blankets hold you so completely that your muscles have nothing to do. Four or five postures in an hour, five to ten minutes in each.
It looks like the easiest class on the schedule and is often the one people find hardest, because there is nowhere to put the effort.
What to expect
- Long holds — five minutes or more
- A lot of props, adjusted for you
- Dim light, little music
- Feeling restless before you feel settled
Level
Gentle enough for recovery from illness or injury, and commonly recommended in pregnancy.
All levels welcome. Every class here is open to every body. Teachers offer options throughout, resting whenever you want to is always fine, and no studio expects you to know the poses on your first visit. Tell the teacher it is your first time — they would rather know.
Who it suits
- Tired rather than under-exercised
- Coming back from injury or a stressful stretch
- People who train hard and need real recovery
What it gives you
- Positions your day never puts you in
- Practice at down-regulating on purpose
- A class that asks nothing of your energy
Before you go
Wear layers — you cool down over a long hold. Falling asleep is common and fine.
On heat — Sometimes run gently warm — enough to stay comfortable while still, not to sweat.
